Légende :  Israel. Jerusalem. Religious school in the orthodox Jewish district of Mea Shearim. Hanouka "holiday of the lights". It is one of the least solemn Jewish holidays. This holiday of week usually falls in December. Hanouka is not of biblical origin. It is about the remembrance of the victory of Maccabées on the Syrian (167 BC) which saved the Judaism of the destruction. Since this time there, in every Hànouka, the Jews light a candle a day during week, by adding one every evening on the ménora to eight branches. A ninth candle, named shammès ( the servant), a little bigger than the others, serves for lighting the other candles. This to show that each can give love and light, to his fellow man without losing his own brightness. Hanouka is the only Jewish festivity connected to a war fact; it is a profane, not religious celebration. Hanoukà is celebrated with holidays, games and presents for the children.
